Presentations - June/July 2006

The Men's Center Board appreciates the volunteer presenters who return from time to time and welcome first timers. Their presentations add a new dimension to our weekly Wednesday night gatherings.

Please take time to read the descriptions and plan to attend if they stimulate your interest. Bring a friend to share the experience and acquaint him/her with the Men's Center. Each presentation is intended to promote personal growth, stimulate your interest in a topic, and to give you an opportunity to interact with other attendees.

We are always looking for new presenters and topics. Please call Randy at The Men's Center, 612-822-5892 with your ideas and names. We appreciate your help.

Presentations are the sole responsibility of the presenter(s). The Men's Center does not endorse, takes no specific position, nor does it hold any opinion on the presentations, or of any information imparted, or of the presenter(s) themselves.

The Men's Center is a RESOURCE for the community, a clearing house for information of all kinds, agreeable or not, to one's beliefs. Listen, participate and make your own decisions.

We are all familiar with a man’s physical tools (a hammer, a sword, a plow.....) Is this enough? What about integrity, commitment, action and clarity? I know that most men want and need these tools. The New Warrior Training Adventure can help. Join a circle of warriors to ask questions and hear how the adventure has changed men’s lives.

“The initiation of men is the hope of the world.” - Don Jones, former chairman, ManKind Project.

The CHI Factorization: A New Technology & How It Can Work for You
Presenter: Tim Monickin
When: June 21, 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Open to Men and Women

Since the 1980’s, various groups have been actively researching the operative framework of the collective human intellect (the ‘CHI’) for use in the cybernetic systems. Short of “divine intervention,” the advent of this technology will ostensibly create sentience in the made-man systems of tomorrow. This will result in a veritable “mixed bag.” To what extent the applications will eventuate as “Promethean” and “Pandorean,” will be largely up to the public’s awareness and willingness to participate in building intelligent concensus. The “intuitive model,” made available to those interested, can, in the meantime, be internalized and brought into advantage for creative problem solving and finding of common ground in areas otherwise steeped in false dichotomies. This model helps to build reflexive mentalities founded on complementary dialectics, rather than the all-too-prevalent oppositional, simple-minded thinking found nowadays... even in our nation’s capital. The architectures in the public model will be explored, along with suggested readings, websites, blogs, etc. for those wanting to pursue the offerings of the model and related areas of interest.

Trained in Design Science, Systems Theory, The Cognitive Sciences, & Social Sciences, Timothy Monicken is cofounder of the twenty-year-old research group pioneering an “auto-epistemologically” driven operating system – an intellect, for the human-made “cyber-systems” of tomorrow. He is President - Applications Director of The Tensegrity Group. Inc., which is presently helping to spearhead an outreach program focused on bringing an ever-increasing awareness (and ‘literacy’) into the public’s scope pertaining to this technology.

Dare to Explore Adult Matters Hidden in Plain Sight
Presenter: Jim Duffy
Date: June 28, 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Open to Men and Women – Adults only

Fred Rogers, famous creator of the children’s TV show “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood,” was a wise psychological and philosophical genius. What is less known is that Fred’s wisdom is immensely important to adults, too. Learn at this seminar how Fred spoke to the most profound concerns of adults and why this thinking provides a basis to critique our social institutions and how our human dignity is diminished by them. When Fred asked, “Won’t you be my neighbor?” on each of his TV shows, he was also reminding us of our most profound human need - a need that is abused and neglected under our present social institutions. These are institutions harming our capacity to be neighbors, to care for each other, and simply put, to love! Learn abour Fred’s insights along with those of Robert Fulgham, author of “All I Need to Know, I learned in Kindergarten,” and Patty Joe Shannor, creator of “Capitalism and Other Kids Stuff”. You may wish to read Fred Rogers book, “You Are Special!” Why? Because you REALLY ARE!

Jim Duffy is a writer and freelance researcher in a wide variety of areas of human studies. He is a humanist, educator, and consultant whose popular presentations and many subjects at The Men’s Center have been well received as both interesting and useful as well as often controversial.
